Our Crops - Mungbeans
Mungbeans are a three month crop that suit a range of crop rotations. Bean Growers Australia supplies Mungbeans to domestic and export/overseas customers in the manufacturing, processing, processing No. 1 and cooking (sprouting) grades. Bean Growers focuses on supplying consistent, high quality Mungbeans to our customers and encourage our growers to aim for high quality beans.
Bean Growers Australia applies the industry standards to Mungbeans.
Growers supplying Mungbeans are paid on a clean, inward weight less bagging and grading charges. Growers are not charging for polishing and colour sorting.

Preferred Mungbean Varieties
Crystal
- this Australian Mungbean Association variety is now the dominant variety grown
- plant approximately 25 kg/ha (28 – 30 plants/m squared)
- average 13 000 seeds/kg
- resistance to Powdery Mildew, Halo Blight and Tan Spot - some spraying is still required, depending on seasonal conditions
- suitable for processing type quality
- suitable for growing from the Burdekin to the Riverina
- has been compared to a woody weed for its persistence in dry conditions
Satin
- lacklustre, dull variety in appearance
- plant approximately 21 – 23 kg/ka
- average 15 000 seeds/kg
- Satin II has resistance to Powdery Mildew, Halo Blight and Tan Spot - some spraying is still required, depending on seasonal conditions
Berken
- suitable for sprouting (has the least amount of hard seeds)
- an old variety that tends to lodge, hence only experienced growers tend to persevere
- average 15 000 seeds/kg
Mungbean Agronomic Overview
- spring plant in Southern Queensland generally starts in mid September and summer plant in mid December
- 60 cm of moisture in the profile is enough to get a crop to harvest
- new varieties very reliable; drought tolerance, more robust, disease resistant
- Crystal volunteers can be hard to kill
